How modern car keys work

Modern car keys are much more than just a piece of metal. Inside each key are several parts that all work together to unlock, start and protect your vehicle. Below is a breakdown of what each part does:

The blade: Visible metal part of the key.

What it does: Opens the door manually, turns ignition on older vehicles.

How it's made: The blade is cut using a specialist key cutting machine, it copies the exact depth and form of the original, or the blade is cut using the vehicle's key code. Even a tiny error can stop the key from turning properly.

The transponder Chip (The security part): inside the plastic head of the key is a small electronic chip called a transponder.

When you put the key in the ignition or press the start button, the car sends a signal (code) to the chip. If the chip sends back the correct coded response, the engine will start. If it doesn't, the car will 'crank over' but won't start.

How it is programmed: I connect specialist key programming equipment to your car's immobiliser system so the vehicle recognises it as an authorised key. Each vehicle stores this data securely and can't simply be copied without the correct specialist equipment.

The remote buttons (lock/unlock): Most modern car keys also contain a remote control circuit board.

What it does: Locks/ unlocks doors, releases the boot, activates the alarm.

How it is programmed: The remote must be synchronised to your vehicle. This done through the car's onboard system using professional programming equipment.

Replacing a car key today involves:

  • Precision cutting of the key blade
  • Programming the immobiliser chip
  • Synchronising the remote functions
  • Ensuring security systems remain intact
  • Maintaining stable vehicle voltage during programming

It is no longer just cutting a key- it is secure electronic coding specific to your vehicle.
